Oral glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) Pill for Weight Loss
In the UK, Orforglipron (Foundayo) is currently in the final stages of the regulatory process. While the US FDA approved it on April 1, 2026, it has not yet been fully cleared for sale in the UK, though it is expected very soon.
Once approved by the MHRA (likely mid-2026), Orforglipron will be available through private online pharmacies and private GPs. NHS availability will come later, with final NICE guidance on November 18, 2026, likely making it widely accessible in early 2027.
Estimated Price: While the UK price isn't confirmed, it is expected to be competitive with current injections (£150–£250 per month).
What is Orforglipron?
Orforglipron (Brand name: Foundayo) is a once-daily pill from Eli Lilly, designed to help adults lose weight and manage type 2 diabetes.
It works by
- reducing appetite,
- slowing stomach emptying, and improving blood sugar control.
Unlike other GLP-1 treatments such as Wegovy or Mounjaro, Foundayo is taken as a pill, with no injections, refrigeration, or food/water restrictions, making it a more convenient option for patients.
Clinical Results (ATTAIN-2 Trial)
In the 72-week Phase 3 ATTAIN-2 trial, Orforglipron showed results comparable to injectable GLP-1 therapies:
Significant Weight Loss: Participants taking the highest dose (36 mg) lost an average of 10.5% of their body weight (10.4 kg / 22.9 lbs).
Exceptional Blood Sugar Control: 75% of users on the highest dose lowered their HbA1c to ≤6.5%, reaching or falling below the threshold for a diabetes diagnosis.

Orforglipron is generally safe and works like other GLP-1 medicines. The most common side effects affect the stomach and digestion and are usually mild to moderate.
Common Side Effects
These are not usually "dangerous" but are the main reasons people stop the drug:
- Nausea & Vomiting: Most common when moving to a higher dose.
- Diarrhoea or Constipation: Can be severe for some.
- Stomach Pain & Bloating: Often feels like "extreme fullness."
- Sulfur Burps: A common GLP-1 side effect due to slowed digestion.
Warnings
- Some animal studies reported thyroid tumours with GLP-1 drugs. It’s unclear whether this occurs in humans, but it is taken seriously.
- Do not take Foundayo if you or your family has a history of Medullary Thyroid Cancer (MTC) or Multiple Endocrine Neoplasia type 2 (MEN 2).
- See a doctor if you notice a lump in your neck, hoarseness, trouble swallowing, or shortness of breath.
Missed Dose: If you miss 7 days or more of Orforglipron, do not take your usual dose. Contact your doctor to restart at a lower dose to prevent side effects.
Kidneys: Vomiting or diarrhoea can lead to dehydration, which may harm your kidneys. Drink plenty of fluids to stay hydrated.
Storage
Store Orforglipron at room temperature (20–25°C) in its original bottle to protect it from light. Swallow the tablet whole, and keep it away from children and pets.
Buying Orforglipron (Foundayo) in the UK
You cannot buy it in a UK pharmacy today (April 2, 2026), but you should see it appearing in private clinics and potentially on the NHS by the second half of 2026.

How is Orforglipron different from other weight-loss pills?
Most GLP-1 medications, such as semaglutide, are peptides that can be broken down by stomach acid. They must be taken on an empty stomach with a small amount of water, followed by a 30-minute wait. Orforglipron is a small-molecule drug, stable in the digestive system, and may be taken at any time, with or without food or drink.
Does Orforglipron cause hair loss?
Hair loss is not a common side effect of Orforglipron. However, some people may notice temporary hair thinning during rapid weight loss, which can happen with many weight-loss treatments. This is usually short-term and improves as the body adjusts. If hair loss continues, talk to your doctor.
Is it normal to have patchy hair loss or an itchy scalp while taking Orforglipron?
No. While general hair thinning can occur during weight loss, “patchy” hair loss or scalp irritation is not typical for Orforglipron. If you notice round bald spots, redness, or itching, seek medical advice to rule out other conditions such as alopecia areata or a fungal infection.
Can I switch from Wegovy injections to Orforglipron?
Yes, switching is possible under medical supervision. However, you cannot change on a like-for-like dose, as the medicines differ in structure and dosing. Your doctor will usually start you on a lower or mid-range dose of Orforglipron to ensure a safe and well-tolerated transition.
Does it cause the same "nausea" as the injections?
Yes. Orforglipron works on the same parts of the brain and gut, so nausea is a common side effect (about 36% of users). To reduce this, the dose is increased slowly over several months. This helps your body adjust and lowers the chance of stomach upset.
