What is Nasonex and what is it used for?
Nasonex® (mometasone) nasal spray treats the cold-like symptoms of allergic rhinitis – including sneezing, a runny or blocked nose – by reducing inflammation at the source. Unlike a common cold, these allergy symptoms can persist for weeks or months.
It belongs to a class of medications known as corticosteroids, preventing and treating symptoms of Hayfever. Its daily use eases allergy-related symptoms, making breathing easier. This medicine is approved for use in adults and children who are at least 2 years old.
Hay fever/perennial allergies
Hay fever is not just a condition of the summer; it can persist all year, as it can be triggered by pollen from different types of plants, trees, grasses, and weeds. It is called perennial rhinitis, and during winter months, it can be triggered by dust mites, feathers, certain foods, animal hair (or dander), and mold spores. The symptoms of perennial allergic rhinitis and hay fever are:
- Coughing
- Sneezing
- Pressure around the forehead and cheekbones
- Runny or blocked nose
- Loss of smell
- Earache
- Fatigue
- Headache
- Itchy nose

How effective is Nasonex and how long does it take to work?
How Effective is Nasonex?
Nasonex is a highly effective nasal spray for relieving allergy symptoms like congestion, sneezing, and a runny nose. It’s recommended by the NHS and works directly in the nose to reduce inflammation, providing longer-lasting relief than antihistamines alone.
How long does it take to work? NASONEX® Nasal Spray starts working within 12 hours, but you might not get the full benefit in the first 48 hours.
Many users in the UK report significant improvement within a few days of regular use. For best results, use it daily as prescribed. If your symptoms don’t improve after 1-2 weeks, speak to your GP—you may need a different treatment.
However, the full effect may take a few days of consistent use, particularly if your symptoms are severe or long-standing. If you are using it for hay fever, your doctor may recommend you start using Nasonex a week or two before pollen season begins to prevent symptoms from even starting.
How does Nasonex work?
Nasonex hayfever spray contains mometasone furoate, which directly targets inflammation in the nasal passages and stops the production of those chemicals that cause allergic reactions.
When you spray it into your nose, it reduces swelling, irritation, and mucus production, easing symptoms such as itchiness, sneezing, and congestion caused by hay fever or perennial rhinitis. Unlike decongestant sprays, which lead to rebound congestion with overuse, Nasonex is safe for long-term use under medical supervision.
How to take Nasonex Nasal Spray?
You must use Nasonex for allergies according to your doctor’s recommendations, such as:
Priming the bottle
Before using Nasonex spray for the first time, prime your bottle by pumping the spray 10 times until a fine mist is produced. If you have not used the spray for 14 days or more, re-prime your device by pumping the spray 2 times until a fine mist is produced. The priming process includes:
- Gently shake your bottle
- Put your forefinger and middle finger on either side of the nozzle with your thumb underneath the bottle. Do not pierce the nasal applicator.
- Point the nozzle away from you, and after this, press down with your fingers to pump the spray until a fine mist is produced.
Administration
- Shake your bottle gently and remove the dust cap.
- Gently blow your nose.
- Close your one nostril with your finger and put the nozzle into the other nostril.
- Tilt your head forward slightly and keep the bottle upright.
- Gently breathe through your nose whilst squirting the spray into your nose once with your fingers.
- Breath out through your mouth.
- Repeat the same process if you need to take another spray in the same nostril.
- Remove the nozzle from your nostril and breathe out through your mouth.
- Wipe the nozzle and replace the dust cap.
Do not share your medicine with others, and do not take more or less than the recommended dose. If you are still unsure how to use Nasonex spray, read the patient leaflet.
How long do you need to take Nasonex for?
The duration of treatment depends on your doctor’s recommendations and the condition being treated. Usually, you can take Nasonex for up to 12 weeks. You must consult your doctor if you do not feel better after using it for 14 days.
Nasonex nasal spray dosage
Each actuation delivers 50 micrograms of mometasone furoate (as the monohydrate).
For Perennial Rhinitis or Seasonal allergies
Adults (12+ years): Start with 2 sprays in each nostril once daily. If symptoms improve, reduce to 1 spray per nostril daily. If symptoms persist, your doctor may increase the dose to 4 sprays in each nostril once daily.
For nasal Polyps
- Two actuations/spray (50 micrograms/actuation) in each nostril once daily.
If symptoms do not improve after 5 to 6 weeks, the dose is increased to 2 actuations (50 micrograms/actuation) in each nostril twice daily.

Nasonex alternatives

Neoclarityn: It is a newer antihistamine with a good safety profile and minimal side effects. It is also taken once daily.

FAQ
Can I use Nasonex nasal spray with antihistamines?
Yes. There are no interactions between the two.
Is Nasonex nasal spray a steroid?
Yes, therefore this medication should not be used for more than 3 months.
Is Nasonex a steroid or antihistamine?
Nasonex is a steroid nasal spray, not an antihistamine. It contains mometasone furoate, a corticosteroid that reduces inflammation in the nasal passages and alleviates allergy symptoms.
Can I use Nasonex every day?
You can use Nasonex daily as prescribed, especially for managing allergic rhinitis. However, the long-term use must be monitored by a doctor to avoid the risk of adverse effects such as nosebleeds or nasal irritation.
Which is better, Nasonex or Flonase?
Nasonex and Flonase are effective steroid nasal sprays for allergy relief. Nasonex causes fewer side effects and is generally safe for long-term use. Flonase acts faster and is more widely available. The selection depends on your tolerance level and response.
What is the difference between an antihistamine nasal spray and a steroid nasal spray?
Antihistamine nasal sprays block histamine to quickly relieve itching, sneezing, and a runny nose. Steroid nasal sprays reduce inflammation in the nasal passage, providing longer-lasting relief from congestion.
Can I use Flonase and Nasonex together?
It is not recommended to use Flonase and Nasonex together as both are steroid nasal sprays and can increase the risk of nosebleeds or irritation. Always use one medicine at a time and consult your doctor before combining any two medications.
Is Nasonex safe for long-term use?
Nasonex is generally considered safe for long-term use when used as directed and sticks to prescribed doses. Rarely, long-term use may cause side effects such as nasal irritation, affecting growth in children, or systemic steroid effects.

In the UK, Nasonex is available on prescription only and cannot be purchased over the counter.
Does Nasonex help with a blocked nose?
Nasonex relieves a blocked nose, especially if it is caused by nasal inflammation or allergies. It reduces swelling in your nasal passages, making breathing easier. Is there a generic version of Nasonex?

Can children use Nasonex?
Children can use Nasonex nasal spray, but it is approved for children aged 2 years and older for allergic rhinitis and 12 and up for nasal polyps. Always follow your doctor’s instructions for dosage and duration.
