Epiduo gel is an effective and popular branded treatment, prescribed for moderate to severe acne. It combines Adapalene and Benzoyl Peroxide to address acne by clearing pores and targeting acne-causing bacteria.
Adapalene is classed as a third-generation retinoid (a form of vitamin A). It works to reduce inflammation and blackhead/whitehead formation by reducing the growth of the keratin surface skin cells that can block pores.
Benzoyl peroxide is a powerful antimicrobial agent that helps treat acne by removing dead skin cells and preventing clogged pores.
How effective is Epiduo?
Epiduo is highly effective in reducing acne symptoms. Most people (over 87%) notice improvement in their skin, like fewer pimples and clearer complexion, within the first month of using it regularly. Individual results may vary.
In the study, Epiduo showed promising results:
- Over 75% of patients had more than a 50% reduction in non-inflammatory lesions.
- Almost 70% experienced a similar reduction in inflammatory lesions.
- The total number of lesions decreased by over 78%.
- A majority of patients, 71.2%, reported a good to excellent response.
- Additionally, 87.6% had a satisfactory to good response.
- 73 participants completed the 12-week study.
- Ages ranged from 12 to 35 years.
- Participants had papular-pustular acne with specific lesion criteria.
- Participants applied the gel once daily at bedtime for 12 weeks.
- Evaluation points at weeks 0, 1, 2, 4, 8, and 12.
How does Epiduo gel work?
Epiduo gel combines adapalene (a a synthetic retinoid) and benzoyl peroxide to efficiently clear acne. Adapalene reduces the growth of surface skin cells, preventing pore blockage.
It also decreases redness and inflammation. Benzoyl peroxide acts as an antimicrobial, killing acne-causing bacteria, and promotes skin turnover to clear blocked pores.
This dual action makes Epiduo effective against blackheads, whiteheads, and red spots associated with acne. Clinically tested, it is approved for both short and long-term treatment of mild to moderate acne symptoms.
How to apply an Epiduo gel pump?
To use Epiduo Gel effectively, follow these steps:
✅ Wash your hands thoroughly.
✅ Clean the affected skin area (with a mild or soapless cleanser).
✅ Gently dry your face with a soft towel without rubbing.
✅ Dispense a small amount of Epiduo Gel from the pump (about a pea-sized portion).
✅ Apply a thin layer of the medication to the affected areas (chin, forehead, and each cheek).
✅ Use the gel carefully near your eyes, lips, and nostrils.
✅ Gently rub the gel into the skin.
✅ To avoid stains or bleaching, let Epiduo dry before it comes in contact with clothing, towels, pillows, or hair.
✅ Follow the recommended frequency as directed by your doctor or pharmacist (typically once a day).
✅ Wash your hands again after applying Epiduo Gel.
Recommended Time to apply:
✅ Preferably, apply Epiduo at night to minimize sun sensitivity.
✅ Ensure your skin is clean and dry before application.
✅ Use a mild cleanser to wash your face before applying.
✅ Early signs of improvement may appear after 1 to 4 weeks.
⚠️ Remember not to overuse the gel; a small amount is sufficient. It's crucial to follow your healthcare provider's instructions for the best results.
⚠️ Avoid combining Epiduo with any product that makes your skin dry or peel, including certain face creams, medicated cleansers, and anti-aging treatments; instead, use them at different times.
❌ DO NOT apply Epiduo on eczema, cuts, grazes, or sunburnt skin.

Are you aware that (please read carefully and understand the following points):
- You should not apply Epiduo to areas of skin that are broken or sunburnt or to areas of eczema.
- This medicine must not come in contact with eyes, mouth, mucus membranes and that if it does by accident you should seek medical advice
- You should avoid exposure to strong sunlight or UV light whilst using Epiduo as your skin may become more sensitive to sunlight whilst using Epiduo. If sunlight exposure is neccessary, you must wear sunscreen and protective clothing.
- You should avoid contact of Epiduo with clothing, towels and bed linen as it can bleach fabrics and hair.
- If using Epiduo then apply once a day after washing your face with a mild cleanser and fully drying.
Wash and dry the acne affected areas with warm water and apply a thin layer of Epiduo gel to the affected areas once daily at bedtime.
Ensure that it is applied to the whole area and not just individual spots. Rub the gel in with fingertips and use sparing amounts.
Excess use of Epiduo may irritate the skin further. Do not apply Epiduo gel near the eyes, lips, nostrils or on any broken skin. Wash your hands thoroughly before and after use.
If you experience dry and irritated skin at the start of Epiduo treatment, you may want to try using Epiduo every other day and work up to daily treatment.
Sunlight and UV light should be avoided with use of Epiduo, this includes sunbeds.
How long does it take to work?
The results of epiduo can be seen between 1 to 4 weeks of treatment. The treatment should still then be continued as acne will improve over time.
Is there anybody who cannot use Epiduo?
Epiduo is not suitable for those with a hypersensitivity to any of the ingredients or in pregnancy.
What should I avoid when using Epiduo gel?
- Other acne products that contain retinoids or benzoyl peroxide
- Sunlight and UV lamps
- Products that irritate, dry or exfoliate the skin.
Who is Epiduo for?
Epiduo is recommended for mild to moderate acne, offering an effective solution for managing symptoms like pimples, blackheads, and whiteheads.
Doctors may also suggest using Epiduo alongside antibiotic capsules like lymecycline as part of a comprehensive treatment plan. This combination addresses acne both topically and internally for more effective symptom control.
Is Epiduo Gel safe during pregnancy or breastfeeding?
Epiduo Gel is not considered safe during pregnancy or breastfeeding. Consult with a healthcare professional for personalized advice.
Why should NOT use Epiduo while pregnant or breastfeeding?
Because this medication can be absorbed through the skin and may harm an unborn baby, it's important for pregnant women or those planning to become pregnant to avoid using this medication.
Can Epiduo gel react with other medication?
Epiduo gel may interact with other medications, and it's important to inform your healthcare provider about all the medications you are currently taking. This includes prescription drugs, over-the-counter medicines, and herbal supplements.
Certain medications, especially those containing benzoyl peroxide or other skin products, may interact with Epiduo, leading to potential side effects or reduced effectiveness.
Additionally, avoid cosmetics or toiletries that dry, irritate, or exfoliate the skin for a safe and effective skincare routine.
Always consult with your healthcare professional to ensure safe and effective use of Epiduo in conjunction with other medications.
How do I know if Epiduo is working?
Epiduo's effectiveness can be observed by a reduction in acne symptoms like fewer pimples, blackheads, and whiteheads, as well as improvements in skin texture and complexion.
However, individual responses vary, and significant changes may take a few weeks, with at least 4 weeks needed for optimal results.
Is Epiduo safe to use long term?
Epiduo has undergone clinical testing and has been approved for both short and long-term (up to 12 months) treatment of acne. However, the duration of use should be determined in consultation with your healthcare provider, who can assess your individual response and overall skin health.
Regular follow-ups with your healthcare professional are important to monitor the continued safety and effectiveness of Epiduo during long-term use.
Why do I still get pimples on Epiduo?
It's common to experience skin redness, dryness, peeling, mild burning, swelling, or a temporary worsening of acne in the initial 4 weeks of using this product. These effects typically lessen with continued use. If any of these effects persist or worsen, it's important to inform your doctor or pharmacist promptly.
Does Epiduo take 3 months to work?
You may start seeing better skin within one to four weeks of using Epiduo, but for some, significant improvement might take eight weeks or more. It works gradually, so be patient and consistent with use.
Does Epiduo clear hormonal acne?
Epiduo can be effective in treating hormonal acne (deep, painful cysts), but its success can vary among individuals. It contains adapalene and benzoyl peroxide, which target different aspects of acne, including inflammation and bacteria.
However, the underlying causes of hormonal acne may require additional or different treatments like Epiduo and oral medications may be recommended by your healthcare provider.
Does Epiduo clear acne scars?
Clinical studies indicate that Epiduo and Epiduo Forte can help prevent new acne scars and improve the appearance of mild rolling scars or hyperpigmentation.
However, while these treatments primarily target active acne by reducing inflammation and preventing breakouts, their impact on existing scars is more limited.
For significant scar improvement, other dermatological treatments like laser therapy, chemical peels, or microdermabrasion may be more suitable.
Consult your healthcare provider to explore the best evidence-based options tailored to your specific skin condition and scar type.
Does acne come back after Epiduo?
If you stop using this medicine too soon, your acne may return or get worse, as its effectiveness in preventing breakouts is related to consistent and continued use.
To maintain results, it's crucial to follow your healthcare provider's guidance on how long to use Epiduo and any recommended post-treatment care.
