Dermovate is the most potent topical corticosteroid used to treat severe and resistant skin inflammation. It works by reducing redness, itching, and swelling caused by inflammatory skin conditions such as eczema, psoriasis, and lichen planus.
It comes in two formulations:
- Dermovate Cream – best for moist, weeping, or less dry skin areas.
- Ointment – better suited for dry, thick, or scaly skin as it provides more occlusion and moisture retention.
While both forms contain the same active ingredient (clobetasol propionate) and have equal strength, the choice between them depends on the type of skin and the specific area being treated.
Both forms are among the most recommended treatments for stubborn inflammatory skin conditions. Noticeable improvement can often be seen within two weeks of regular use.
However, to ensure safe and effective results, you should consult your healthcare provider before, during, and after using Dermovate.
Please note: Overdose, underdose, side effects, and application methods are among the few things that should be clinically managed by a pharmacist or by following instructions laid down in the patient's leaflet.
What is Dermovate used for?
In the UK, Dermovate (clobetasol propionate) is prescribed for severe or stubborn skin inflammation, such as eczema, when milder treatments like hydrocortisone, betamethasone, or moisturisers don’t work well enough.
Dermovate is used for:
- Atopic eczema
- Psoriasis
- Seborrheic dermatitis
- Allergic/Irritant contact dermatitis
- Discoid lupus erythematosus
- An eruption of hard nodules on the skin with intense itching
- Erythroderma is characterised by intense and widespread reddening of the skin
Use Dermovate with a moisturiser because it can dry out or irritate your skin. It doesn’t cure the condition but helps control flare-ups and itching.
Who should not be used to treat:
Use Dermovate with a moisturiser because it can dry out or irritate your skin. It doesn’t cure the condition but helps control flare-ups and itching.
- Rosacea
- Bacterial skin infections such as impetigo
- Itchy genitals and anus
- Acne vulgaris
- Perioral Dermatitis
- Fungal skin infections such as thrush, ringworm, and athlete's foot
- Nappy Rash
- Dermatitis around the mouth

How to use Dermovate Cream?
Always follow your doctor's instructions when using Dermovate cream or ointment. You can also follow the instructions in the patient's leaflet that is packaged together with the medication. Below are a few steps to follow when applying the medicine.
- Clean your hands before applying the cream/ointment to the treatment area
- Evenly apply a thin layer of dermovate to the affected areas
- where there is hyperkeratosis, the effect of clobetasol can be enhanced, if necessary, by occluding the treatment area with polythene film
- Clean your hands after applying the medicine.
How often to use:
Dermovate cream is generally applied once or twice a day. Your doctor may change how often you use it depending on your condition.
How long to use it:
Treatment usually lasts a few weeks, often between 2 and 4 weeks, to reduce the chance of side effects.
How much to use:
Apply just enough cream to cover the affected area in a thin layer, rubbing it in gently. You should not use more than 50g per week.
Using for a long time:
If you need to use Dermovate for longer periods, your doctor might recommend a milder cream or ointment instead.
What are the risks of using Dermovate for a long time?
Using strong corticosteroids like Dermovate for a long time can cause skin thinning, stretch marks, and in some cases, more serious issues like problems with your adrenal glands due to consistent systemic absorption.
How much Dermovate should you use per week?
You should not use more than 50g (or 50ml) of Dermovate per week.
When should you stop using Dermovate treatment?
You should stop using Dermovate cream or ointment if you experience serious allergic reactions, decreased adrenal function, or high levels of corticosteroids in your bloodstream.
How does Dermovate cream or ointment work?
Dermovate cream or Ointment contains clobetasol propionate 0.05%, a corticosteroid that reduces inflammation by decreasing the release of inflammatory chemicals in skin cells. This helps alleviate swelling, itching, and redness associated with skin conditions like eczema and psoriasis.
Dermovate isn't suitable for broken skin, open wounds, or areas affected by certain conditions like viral, bacterial, or fungal skin infections, acne, or itching without inflammation.
Alternatives to Dermovate (Clobetasol Propionate)
Other steroid treatments can be used in place of Dermovate; they include Eumovate and Betnovate.
Aveeno and E45 cream are some of the non-steroid creams used in place of Dermovate; however, it is advisable to consult your GP to get the best treatment option based on your symptoms.

Do's and don'ts
DO's
- Allow enough time for absorption after application before applying an emollient.

- Consult your doctor if your symptoms do not improve after two to four weeks or if the condition worsens.
- Use a smaller portion of Dermovate when applying to a child's area of treatment.

- Do not use the ointment /cream past the doctor-recommended timeline
Stop using the treatment if the area of treatment becomes infected-
- Avoid using Dermovate as a moisturiser; use it only as instructed by your pharmacist.

- Dermovate contains 50mg of propylene glycol per gram, which may cause skin irritation. Consult your doctor in case of severe skin irritation.
