How to apply Dermovate Cream & Ointment

Always follow your doctor's instructions when following Dermovate cream or ointment. You can also follow the instructions under the patient's leaflet that is packaged together with the medication. Below are a few steps to follow when applying the medicine.

• Clean your hands before applying the cream/ointment to the treatment area
• Evenly apply a thin layer of dermovate to the affected areas
• Use a loose dressing to cover the area being treated
• Clean your hands after applying the medicine.

Can you use Dermovate on your private parts?

It's not advisable to use Dermoavte on your genital areas. Always seek medical advice.

How much Dermovate should you use per week?

The total amount of Dermovate you should apply should not exceed 50g (50ml) per week.

When should you stop using Dermovate medication?

You should stop using Dermovate if you experience serious allergic reactions, decreased adrenal functions, and high levels of corticosteroids in your bloodstream.

❌ Dermovate should not be used to treat:

Dermovate is only formulated to treat skin inflammation, avoid using Dermovate to treat the following skin conditions:

• Rosacea
• Bacterial skin infections such as impetigo
• Itchy genitals and anus 
• Acne vulgaris
• Perioral Dermatitis
• Fungal skin infections such as thrush, ringworm, and athlete's foot
• Nappy Rash
• Dermatitis around the mouth
• Viral skin infections such as chickenpox, shingles, cold sores, or herpes simplex

How does Dermovate cream work?

Dermovate contains Clobetasol Propionate, a corticosteroid that reduces inflammation by decreasing the release of inflammatory chemicals in skin cells. This helps alleviate swelling, itching, and redness associated with skin conditions like eczema and psoriasis.

Dermovate cream isn't suitable for broken skin, open wounds, or areas affected by certain conditions like viral, bacterial, or fungal skin infections, acne, or itching without inflammation.

Are there alternative treatments to Dermovate?

Other steroid treatments can be used in place of Dermovate, they include Eumovate and Betnovate. Aveeno and E45 cream are some of the non-steroid creams used in place of Dermovate, however, it is advisable to consult your doctor to get the best treatment option based on your symptoms.

❌ DON'Ts

• Do not use Dermovate around naked flames. Dermovate is a fire hazard getting in contact with naked flames can burn your dressing which has already been in contact with the medicine.
• Do not use airtight dressing to cover the area of treatment. Tight dressings increase the rate at which the medicine is absorbed in your body increasing the risk of side effects.
• Do not use cream/ointments on your eyes, nose, or mouth.
• Do not use the ointment /cream past the doctor-recommended timeline

❌ Stop using the treatment if the area of treatment becomes infected

• Avoid using Dermovate as a moisturizer, use it only as instructed by your pharmacist.
• Do not apply thick layers of Dermovate on the area of treatment
• Dermovate contains 50mg of propylene glycol per gram which may cause skin irritation. Consult your doctor in case of severe skin irritation.

• If you are allergic to corticosteroids or other allergy types, consult your doctor before taking dermovate cream medication.
• Share with your doctor, your medical history before using the medication
• Avoid using Dermovate if you have an infection or soar in your area of treatment

⚠️ Consult your doctor before using Dermovate if you have a serious injury or going through surgery treatment.

• Avoid using Dermovate cream during pregnancy especially if the risks outweigh the benefits
• Avoid using Dermovate as a breastfeeding mother as the cream may pass to the breast milk
• Talk to your healthcare provider before using Dermovate cream alongside other medications
• Do not use Dermovate if you experience bone pains or severe bone symptoms
• Always clean your skin before applying Dermovate to prevent infections

⚠️ If you have psoriasis, consult a doctor before using the cream. The doctor may advise you to use airtight dressing especially if you have thick patches of psoriasis on your knees or elbows.

• Using the cream around a chronic leg ulcer increases the risk of infections or allergic reactions.
• Avoid using the cream around your eyes as it may cause glaucoma or cataracts
• Use Dovobet for no more than 5 days to avoid facial skin thinning (excessive use may damage your facial skin)
• Avoid using the medicine on children under the age of 1
• Do not use bandages in areas where you apply the cream
• Avoid smoking while using Dermovate cream/ointment.

Common side effects are mostly manageable and can disappear over time, they may affect 1 out of 10 people. Examples of common side effects include:

• Pain

Uncommon side effects 

Uncommon side effects if not well managed may lead to serious problems, they may affect 1 out of 100 people. Examples of uncommon side effects include:

• Blood vessels become visible on the skin
• Skin thinning that leads to stretch marks 
• Hair loss on the scalp 
• Acne
• Numbness on the fingers
• Unhealing skin condition

Infrequent side effects 

1 out of 10,000 people experience rare side effects due to long-term use of Dermovate. Examples of rare side effects include:

• Serious allergic reactions such as swelling, itching, and difficulty in breathing
• Fatigue increased thirst urge to urinate, and weak muscles are symptoms caused by the increase in corticosteroid levels in the bloodstream.
• Hives
