What is sumatriptan used for?
Sumatriptan is specifically prescribed for migraine attacks, with or without aura. An aura is a warning sign that you're about to have a migraine, such as vision problems, numbness, dizziness, or difficulty speaking. It is not used as a preventive treatment.
Migraines are thought to involve temporary changes in blood vessel activity and nerve signalling in the brain. Sumatriptan works by targeting this process to relieve migraine pain and associated symptoms, such as:- Moderate to severe headache
- Sensitivity to light or sound
- Nausea
- Throbbing pain
Sumatriptan is considered a standard treatment for migraines when simple painkillers alone do not provide adequate relief.
How sumatriptan works
Sumatriptan works by constricting blood vessels around the brain and reducing inflammation in nerve pathways. This helps to relieve pain, nausea, and other discomforts of a migraine attack.
Sumatriptan tablets typically begin to work within 30 minutes, and many people find relief within 30 minutes to 2 hours after taking the pill. How to take Sumatriptan tablets?
Take sumatriptan as soon as possible after migraine or aura symptoms begin. The usual dose is one tablet per attack.
If your symptoms persist after the first dose, a second tablet may be taken at least two hours later if advised by your clinician.
Do not take more than the prescribed maximum daily dose. Your GP can advise exactly how many tablets you can take in 24 hours.
Always follow the dosing instructions provided by your prescriber or on the label. If you are unsure, consult a pharmacist or your GP.Sumatriptan 50 mg vs 100 mg tablets
Sumatriptan is commonly prescribed in 50 mg and 100 mg strengths. Your GP or prescriber will decide the most appropriate dose based on:
- Your migraine pattern
- How you responded to treatment in the past
- Other medical considerations
Sumatriptan tablets vs other forms
Sumatriptan is available in several other forms, including nasal spray and injections. All forms contain the same active ingredient and work in the same way, but differ in how they are absorbed and how quickly they may act. Tablets are a commonly prescribed form because they are convenient and very effective for most people.
Other treatment options
Sumatriptan is one of several triptans used for migraine relief. Alternative triptan medicines include:
Each works in a similar way, but you may find some work better for you than others. Your clinician will advise on the best option based on your symptoms and medical history.
Using sumatriptan with other medicines
In many cases, painkillers such as paracetamol or ibuprofen may be recommended to you first. If these are not effective alone, sumatriptan can be added to help manage migraine attacks. Always check with a doctor or pharmacist before taking other medicines alongside sumatriptan.

How to safely take sumatriptan tablets:
- Swallow the tablet whole with a glass of water.
- Take sumatriptan as soon as your migraine starts. It does not prevent migraines, so it should not be taken before symptoms begin.
- If your migraine improves but then comes back, you may take another tablet after at least 2 hours.
- If the first dose doesn’t help, do not take another dose for the same migraine.
- Do not take sumatriptan at the same time as other triptans or medicines containing ergotamine.
Dosage
Sumatriptan tablet dosage
The dose depends on what your clinician prescribes, but standard tablet dosing for migraines is:
Tablets (oral use)
Usual dose: 50 mg at the start of a migraine
Some people may be prescribed 100 mg if lower doses are not effective. If symptoms return, a second dose may be taken after at least 2 hours.
Maximum dose in 24 hours: 300 mg
Always follow the dose on your prescription and the Patient Information Leaflet supplied with your medicine.
FAQ
What is the difference between Sumatriptan and Imigran?
Imigran is a brand name, while sumatriptan is the generic name of the treatment. Both contain the same active ingredient (sumatriptan) and work in the same way, so they are medically equivalent. The generic version is usually cheaper.
How long does sumatriptan take to work, and how long do the effects last?
Sumatriptan tablets typically start to work within 30 to 60 minutes. Relief can last for several hours, but symptoms may return, in which case a second dose can sometimes be taken after at least 2 hours (if advised).
Can I use other migraine treatments with sumatriptan?
You should not take sumatriptan with other triptans (such as rizatriptan or zolmitriptan) or with medicines containing ergotamine.
You can usually take simple painkillers like paracetamol, ibuprofen or aspirin alongside sumatriptan. Anti-sickness medicines may also be used if needed. Is sumatriptan a painkiller?
No. Sumatriptan is not a standard painkiller. It works by acting on the blood vessels and nerves. Painkillers such as paracetamol or ibuprofen can be taken alongside it to help with symptoms.
Can I take sumatriptan with alcohol?
Drinking alcohol is not recommended. Sumatriptan can cause dizziness or drowsiness, and alcohol can make these side effects worse. Alcohol can also trigger migraines in some people.
Does sumatriptan work for normal headaches?
Sumatriptan should only be used for migraines (and sometimes cluster headaches). It is not suitable for treating ordinary tension headaches. For regular headaches, painkillers like paracetamol are more appropriate.
Does sumatriptan prevent migraines?
No. Sumatriptan is a treatment, not a prevention. It should be taken after a migraine starts, not before.
Which triptan works the best?
There is no single “best” triptan for everyone. Different people respond differently, and your GP may suggest trying another triptan if one does not work well for you.
Side Effects
Like all medicines, sumatriptan can cause side effects, although not everyone gets them. Many side effects are mild and short-lived, and some may be linked to the migraine itself rather than the medicine.
Side effects of sumatriptan
Common side effects of sumatriptan:
These affect more than 1 in 100 people and are usually mild or temporary:
- Feeling sick or being sick (nausea or vomiting)
- Feeling dizzy, tired or unsteady
- Hot flushes or feeling hot or cold
- Feeling sleepy or weak
- Shortness of breath
These symptoms usually pass quickly. If they persist or are troublesome, speak to your doctor or pharmacist.
Serious side effects (rare)
In rare cases, sumatriptan can cause more serious reactions. Seek medical help immediately if you experience any of the following after taking sumatriptan:
- Tightness, pressure or heavy feeling in the chest, throat, neck, or jaw that does not go away
- Severe or worsening symptoms that are unusual for you
- Signs of a severe allergic reaction, such as swelling of the face, lips or throat, difficulty breathing, rapid heartbeat, or fainting
Always report side effects that worry you or do not resolve with time. Your doctor or pharmacist can help you understand whether they are due to the medication or the migraine itself.
