Uses of Azithromycin Tablets
Azithromycin tablets are prescription-only antibiotics used to treat chlamydia and other infections caused by bacteria.
For genital chlamydia, they are usually offered when doxycycline is not appropriate for you. This might be due to allergy, intolerance, pregnancy or interactions with other medications that you are currently taking.
For chlamydia, treatment using azithromycin tablets is normally a 3-day course: 1g on the first day and 500mg for the next two days.
Check this patient information leaflet supplied by The Electronic Medicines Compendium for details on side effects and interactions.
Azithromycin Tablets are used to treat a variety of bacterial infections, such as:- Chlamydia (STIs in both men and women).
- Chest, throat, and nasal infections, like bronchitis, pneumonia (mild to moderately severe), tonsillitis, sore throat, and sinus infections.
- Ear infections (otitis media).
- Skin and soft tissue infections (not usually for infected burn wounds).
- Traveller’s diarrhoea.
- In some cases, to prevent or treat MAC infection in people with HIV.
Please Note:
Azithromycin can treat certain skin infections, but it's typically not the first-line treatment for all types. It is effective for bacterial skin infections like cellulitis and abscesses, but for other skin conditions, doctors may prefer other antibiotics depending on the type and severity of the infection.
- Azithromycin is not effective against viral infections like colds or flu.
- Do not use if you’ve had liver problems caused by azithromycin in the past.
How to Take Azithromycin Tablets for Chlamydia Treatment
Your prescriber will confirm exactly how and when to take your course of medication.
For uncomplicated genital chlamydia, an extended 3-day course is usually advised:- Day 1: Take 2 x 500 mg azithromycin tablets together (total 1g)
- Day 2 and Day 3: Take 1 x 500mg azithromycin tablet once a day
Try to take each dose at roughly the same time each day.
You can take azithromycin tablets with or without food. If you notice stomach upset, taking them after a light meal may help. Swallow the tablets whole with half a glass of water.
Key points to remember:- Take the tablets exactly as prescribed and do not share them with anyone else.
- Do not split up the dose during the day unless your doctor tells you to.
- Always complete the full course, even if your symptoms improve earlier.
- Avoid sex (including oral sex) for 7 days after both you and your partner have completed treatment to reduce the risk of passing the infection on or catching it again.
Is Azithromycin or Doxycycline Better for Treating Chlamydia?

They work by stopping the growth of bacteria and are typically prescribed for uncomplicated chlamydial infections.
Doctors generally prescribe Doxycycline as the first-line treatment for chlamydia infection. However, Azithromycin tablets can be an option if someone can't take Doxycycline or other similar Tetracycline antibiotics.

You will need a total of 4 tablets of Azithromycin 500mg for 3 days to complete this longer course.
Azithromycin tablets can be taken in the morning or at night.

FAQ
Azithromycin Pregnancy and Breastfeeding
While some studies on animals and limited data from pregnant women indicate Azithromycin might be safe during pregnancy and breastfeeding (there is no clear evidence of harm to the fetus at moderate doses).
However, Azithromycin is not categorized by the US FDA for use during pregnancy.
Your doctor may suggest another antibiotic (amoxicillin or erythromycin) that is more suitable for the severity of your infection. So, always consult a doctor before taking Azithromycin while pregnant or breastfeeding.
⚠️ During pregnancy, azithromycin 1 g (1000 mg) as a single dose is recommended to treat chlamydia.
Can I have sex during the Azithromycin treatment period for chlamydia?
No, It’s Not Recommended. Azithromycin won't protect you from sexually transmitted infections (STIs) like chlamydia. Even if you're being treated for chlamydia (usually a single dose) with Azithromycin.
Having sex during this time can still spread the infection to your partner(s) because it can take up to 7 days to clear the infection completely.
To be safe, use condoms consistently and correctly every time you have sex, even for at least one week after finishing your Azithromycin course.
If there's any confusion about a condom breaking or potential infection, both partners must get tested for chlamydia and seek treatment if necessary. The CDC recommends undergoing testing approximately three months after the treatment of the initial infection.
Do I need to avoid any food or drink while taking Azithromycin?
No, There are no specific foods or drinks that you need to avoid while taking azithromycin. You can eat and drink normally during the course of treatment.
Can I drink alcohol while taking Azithromycin?
While it's not advised, you can drink alcohol moderately while taking azithromycin. However, if azithromycin makes you dizzy, it's better to skip alcohol as it could make it worse.
Alcohol might make azithromycin less effective, meaning the infection might not completely clear up.
