Overview

NOTE: After selecting this product, you will need to complete a short assessment, so we can make sure this medication is suitable for you.

  • What is Fostair?

Fostair is a combination inhaler containing beclometasone dipropionate (a corticosteroid) and formoterol fumarate dihydrate (a long-acting bronchodilator).

It is used for the regular treatment of asthma in adults whose symptoms are not adequately controlled on a steroid inhaler alone, or who are already stabilised on a steroid and long-acting bronchodilator.

It is also used in adults with severe chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD).

  • How Fostair Inhaler works?

Beclometasone reduces inflammation and swelling in the airways. Formoterol relaxes airway smooth muscle to improve airflow.

Together, they help control ongoing symptoms and reduce the risk of flare-ups when used regularly.

  • Who is it suitable for Fostair?

    • Adults with asthma not controlled on inhaled corticosteroids alone
    • Adults stabilised on steroid and long-acting bronchodilator therapy
    • Adults with severe COPD

Not suitable for children and adolescents under 18 years.

  • Fostair Dosage

Use exactly as prescribed. Your doctor or asthma nurse will confirm whether you are using Fostair:

    • As maintenance treatment only (with a separate reliever inhaler), or
    • As maintenance and reliever therapy (MART)

Fostair is for inhalation through the mouth only.

    Usual Adult Doses – Asthma

    1. Maintenance therapy (with a separate reliever inhaler)
    • 1–2 inhalations twice daily (morning and evening)
    • Maximum: 4 inhalations per day
    • You must carry your fast-acting reliever inhaler for sudden symptoms.
    2. Maintenance and Reliever Therapy (MART)
    • Maintenance: 1 inhalation twice daily
    • Reliever: 1 additional inhalation as needed
    • If symptoms persist after a few minutes, a second inhalation may be taken
    • Maximum: 8 inhalations per day (total)

If you require frequent extra doses, your asthma may not be well controlled and medical review is advised.

    Adult Doses – COPD

    For severe COPD:

    • 2 inhalations twice daily (morning and evening)
    • MART is not used in COPD. A separate reliever inhaler may still be required.
    Missed Dose

Take the missed dose when remembered, unless it is nearly time for the next one.

    Do not double the dose.

  • How to Use Fostair NEXThaler (Dry Powder Inhaler)

The NEXThaler is breath-operated and releases a dose when you inhale strongly.

    Steps:

    1. Open the cover fully until you hear a click.
    2. Breathe out gently, away from the inhaler.
    3. Place the mouthpiece between your lips and breathe in quickly and deeply.
    4. Hold your breath for 5–10 seconds, then breathe out slowly.
    5. Close the cover after use.

The dose counter shows remaining doses.
Rinse your mouth after each dose to reduce the risk of thrush.

How to Use Fostair Pressurised Inhaler (pMDI)

    This is a press-and-breathe inhaler.

Before first use or if unused for several days:

Release two test sprays into the air.

    To take a dose:

    1. Stand or sit upright and remove the cap.
    2. Breathe out gently.
    3. Place the mouthpiece in your mouth.
    4. Start breathing in slowly and press the canister once.
    5. Continue to breathe in fully.
    6. Hold your breath for 5–10 seconds, then breathe out slowly.

If a second puff is required, wait 30 seconds and repeat.
A spacer may be used if advised.
    Rinse your mouth after use.

FAQ

  • What is Fostair used for?

Fostair is used for the regular treatment of asthma and severe COPD in adults.

    Asthma
Fostair is prescribed for adults whose asthma is not adequately controlled with an inhaled corticosteroid and a short-acting reliever inhaler, or for those already stabilised on both a corticosteroid and a long-acting bronchodilator.

    COPD
It is also used in adults with severe chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), a long-term airway condition commonly associated with cigarette smoking, to improve breathing and reduce symptoms.

  • How does Fostair work?

It combines a corticosteroid to reduce airway inflammation with a long-acting bronchodilator to relax airway smooth muscle and improve airflow.

  • Is Fostair a preventer inhaler?

Yes. It is a combination preventer inhaler used regularly to control symptoms and reduce flare-ups.

  • Can Fostair be used for sudden asthma attacks?

Not unless prescribed as MART. Otherwise, a separate reliever inhaler is required for immediate symptoms.

  • Who should use Fostair?

Adults with asthma not controlled on steroid treatment alone, or those already stabilised on combination therapy. It is also prescribed for adults with severe COPD.

  • Does Fostair replace my blue inhaler?

Only if prescribed as MART. Otherwise, you should continue to carry a fast-acting reliever inhaler.
