Overview

NOTE: After selecting this product, you will need to complete a short assessment, so we can make sure this medication is suitable for you.

  • What is a Pulmicort Turbohaler?

Pulmicort Turbohaler is a daily preventer inhaler used to manage asthma. It belongs to the corticosteroid class and contains budesonide, which reduces inflammation in the airways.

Asthma is a long-term condition where the airways become inflamed and narrowed in response to triggers such as allergens, pollution or exercise. This can lead to symptoms such as shortness of breath, chest tightness, and nighttime coughing.

When used every day as prescribed, Pulmicort Turbohaler helps control airway inflammation and reduces the risk of asthma symptoms.

  • What is Pulmicort Turbohaler used for?

Pulmicort Turbohaler is used to treat asthma. It contains budesonide, a corticosteroid that reduces and prevents swelling and inflammation in the lungs.

    Taken daily, it helps to:

    • Prevent breathlessness and chest tightness
    • Reduce night-time coughing
    • Lower the risk of asthma attacks
    • Keep the airways less sensitive to triggers

It should be used every day as prescribed to help prevent asthma symptoms. A separate reliever inhaler is used when symptoms occur to make breathing easier.

  • How does Pulmicort Turbohaler work?

Pulmicort Turbohaler is a breath-activated, “no-push” dry powder inhaler. When you inhale through the mouthpiece, the medicine is delivered directly into the lungs.

It contains budesonide, a corticosteroid (steroid) that reduces inflammation and swelling in the airways to support long-term asthma control.

It comes as a small, hand-held device that is easy to carry and suitable for daily use.

Available as Pulmicort Turbohaler 100mcg, 200 mcg, and 400mcg.

  • How to Use Pulmicort Turbohaler

Pulmicort Turbohaler is a breath-activated inhaler, meaning the medicine is released when you breathe in. Using the correct technique ensures you receive the full prescribed dose.

    1. Remove the protective cap and hold the inhaler upright.
    2. Twist the base fully in one direction, then back until it clicks.
    3. Breathe out gently (away from the inhaler).
    4. Place the mouthpiece in your mouth and breathe in deeply and forcefully.
    5. Remove the inhaler and hold your breath for about 10 seconds.
    6. Breathe out slowly. Repeat if prescribed.
    7. Rinse your mouth with water after use.

If you are unsure how to use your inhaler, speak to your GP, asthma nurse or pharmacist.

When the dose indicator shows around 20 doses remaining, arrange your next prescription.

For full instructions, priming guidance, and detailed safety information, please refer to the Patient Information Leaflet supplied with your inhaler.

Less common side effects can occur. If you notice unusual symptoms or worsening breathing, seek medical advice.

  • Warnings

    • Not for sudden asthma attacks.
    • Always keep your reliever inhaler available for immediate symptom relief.
    • Use daily as prescribed.
    • Do not stop or reduce your dose suddenly without medical advice.
    • Rinse your mouth after use to reduce the risk of oral thrush or throat irritation.
    • Seek medical advice urgently if your breathing worsens, you need your reliever inhaler more often, or it becomes less effective.

Always read the Patient Information Leaflet before use and attend regular asthma reviews to ensure your treatment remains suitable.

FAQ

  • What else should I know?

Use daily as prescribed and do not stop suddenly without medical advice.

Talk to your healthcare professional if you are pregnant, breastfeeding, have a history of lung infections, or take other medicines.

Refer to the Patient Information Leaflet for complete guidance.

  • Are there alternative treatments?

Other preventer inhalers may be available depending on your treatment plan. Do not switch inhalers unless advised by a healthcare professional.

Other inhaled steroid preventers may be prescribed depending on your asthma control. These include Clenil Modulite, Qvar Aerosol Inhaler, Qvar Easi-Breathe and Qvar Autohaler.

Only use inhalers prescribed for you, as strengths and devices differ. Do not switch inhalers without medical advice, as this may affect your asthma control. A separate reliever inhaler is still required for sudden symptoms.

For more information, see the Patient Information Leaflet or speak to your prescriber.

  • Is Pulmicort Turbohaler effective?

Yes. Pulmicort Turbohaler is effective when used daily as prescribed. It works gradually to reduce airway inflammation and prevent asthma symptoms. It does not provide immediate relief.

  • Is Pulmicort Turbohaler effective?

Yes. Pulmicort Turbohaler is effective when used as prescribed and consistently. It reduces airway inflammation and helps prevent asthma symptoms over time.

It is not designed for immediate relief, and maximum benefit may take several weeks of regular use.

  • What are the non-drug alternatives to Pulmicort Turbohaler?

There is no non-drug treatment that replaces a preventer inhaler in asthma management. Inhaled corticosteroids remain the core treatment for controlling airway inflammation.

However, certain measures can support better control:

    • Avoid known triggers such as smoke, allergens, pollution or workplace irritants
    • Stop smoking and avoid second-hand smoke
    • Maintain a healthy weight
    • Attend regular asthma reviews
    • Monitor control with a peak flow meter
    • Ensure correct inhaler technique

These steps improve asthma control but do not replace prescribed controller therapy.
