What is Vydura and how is it used ?
Vydura is a treatment used to treat migraine with or without aura. It is also used as a preventive treatment for adults who experience more than 4 migraine attacks in a month.
The migraine treatment is available as a prescription treatment. It comes in the form of frozen water, which you place on or under your tongue for it to dissolve.
If you are taking the treatment for the first time you should take it once a day and once daily as a preventive migraine treatment.
How does Vydura Work?
Vydura contains an active ingredient known as rimegepant, an oral CGRP antagonist prescribed based on the frequency and severity of your migraines.
Rimegepant works by inhibiting the activity of CGRP (Calcitonin Gene-Related Peptide), a pain-signaling chemical that triggers migraines.
If you experience migraine attacks it means you have increased levels of CGRP. Remegepant blocks the activities of CGRP by attaching to its receptor.
CGRP performs 2 functions: Activates migraine attacks and increases the number of migraine attacks in a month.
How to Take Vydura
Vydura water should be taken once for 24 hours. If you are using the treatment to treat migraine that occurs often, you should take one oral Lyophilisate daily.
If you are treating a one-time attack of migraine you should only take 75mg of Rimegepant within 24 hours. Remember to take the treatment only when the need arises.
Follow your doctor's instructions before taking the Rimegepant treatment. Prioritise reading the Vydura Patient Information Leaflet (PIL) first before taking your dose.
The treatment can be taken with or without food. If your mouth is too dry you can drink water first before taking oral Lyophilisate.
What benefits of Vydura have been shown in studies?
Vydura works faster than a placebo in relieving headache pain. After 2 hours, 20% of patients who took Vydura migraine treatment recorded no head pain compared to 12% who took Placebo.
Rimegepant treats other migraine symptoms such as nausea, photophobia, and phonophobia a. Another study showed taking Vydura reduced the number of migraine attacks a patient received per month.
What is the difference between Vydura and Triptan?
Triptan and Vydura work differently in treating migraines. Triptans work directly to reduce inflammation of blood vessels, therefore relieving migraine symptoms. Vydura works by blocking CGRP activities to reduce swelling, and pain and relieve migraine symptoms.
Alternative treatments for migraine
Before using any treatment option you should discuss it with your GP or healthcare provider. Below are some of the alternative migraine treatments that are often used by patients:

Vydura dosage
For the prevention of migraine, the recommended dose is one oral lyophilisate (75mg rimegepant) every other day.
For the treatment of migraine attack once its started, the recommended dose is one oral lyophilisate (75mg rimegepant) as needed, but no more than once daily.
The maximum daily dose is one oral lyophilisate (75mg rimegepant) per day.

You need to consult a doctor first before taking Vydura (Rimegepant) if you:

- have liver condition
- have kidney condition

What happens if you forget to take a Vydura dose?
If you forget to take the water tablet as a preventive treatment, just wait to take it at your usual time. This prevents you from taking a double dose.
What happens if you take excess Vydura treatment?
If you realize you have taken more treatment than you should, first consult your doctor for further advice. The treatment should only be taken once for 24 hours.
Does Vydura cause medication overuse headaches with long-term use?
Most migraine treatments cause medication overuse headaches or frequent migraines where you have to rely on them entirely. Vydura, a new migraine treatment approved in the UK does not cause medication overuse headaches, however, you should be aware of the possible frequent migraines and monitor these.
Can I take Vydura while using other migraine treatments?
There is no proven evidence of interaction between Vydura water and preventive medication or other types of migraine relief. Manufacturers have no research information about the drug interactions.

Vydura migraine treatment is a prescription treatment. It's not available over the counter, however, it can be used with over-the-counter treatments such as paracetamol and ibuprofen.
