Daktarin Sugar Free 2% Oral Gel
Daktarin Sugar-Free 2% Oral Gel is used to treat superficial fungal infections of the mouth and throat (oral thrush). It’s suitable for adults, children, and infants from 4 months. Do not use it if you're allergic to miconazole, similar antifungals, or any ingredient in the gel. If you have other medical conditions or are taking other medications, consult your doctor or pharmacist first. Always follow the age-specific dosing. When giving to babies and young children, place the gel at the front of the mouth to avoid choking. Read the leaflet carefully and keep it for future reference.

How to Use Daktarin Oral Gel?
For oral use only. Use after meals.
- Apply the gel directly to the affected areas using a clean finger. Keep it in the mouth as long as possible before swallowing.
Adults and children aged 2 years and over:
Apply 2.5 ml (½ measuring spoon) to the affected area four times a day after meals.
Infants and children aged 4 months – 2 years:
- Apply 1.25 ml (¼ measuring spoon) to the affected area four times a day after meals.
➡ Divide each dose into smaller portions and apply to the front of the mouth, not the back, to avoid choking.
Dentures:
- Remove dentures at bedtime and brush them with the gel to prevent reinfection.
- Continue treatment for at least 7 days after symptoms have cleared.
Warnings & Precautions
Do not use this medicine if:
- You are allergic to miconazole or any other ingredient in the gel.
- You have liver disease.
- It is for a baby under 4 months old (risk of choking).
- You are taking warfarin, simvastatin, lovastatin, midazolam (oral), triazolam, cisapride, or certain antihistamines (e.g., terfenadine, astemizole, mizolastine).
Speak to your doctor or pharmacist before use if you:
- Take medicines for diabetes, epilepsy (phenytoin), heart problems, or immune suppression (e.g., cyclosporine, tacrolimus).
- Are pregnant or breastfeeding — use only if advised by a doctor.
- Have a premature infant or one with swallowing difficulties.
Possible Side Effects
Like all medicines, Daktarin Oral Gel can cause side effects, though not everyone gets them.
Common (up to 1 in 10 people):- Feeling sick or vomiting
- Dry mouth
- Abnormal taste
- Mild mouth irritation or regurgitation
Uncommon or rare:
- Diarrhoea, sore mouth, tongue discolouration
- Allergic skin reactions or rash
- Severe (rare): swelling of face, lips, or throat; severe rash or blistering (e.g., Stevens-Johnson syndrome)
If you notice signs of allergy (difficulty breathing, swelling, rash, or blistering), stop using the gel and seek medical help immediately.

What is Daktarin Sugar Free 2% Oral Gel used for?
Daktarin Oral Gel is used to treat superficial fungal infections in the mouth and throat (such as oral thrush caused by Candida) in adults and in children aged 4 months and older.
Who can use this gel?
It can be used by:
- Adults
- Children aged 2 years and above.
- Infants 4 to 24 months, only if their swallowing reflex is properly developed
Not for:
- Babies under 4 months
- Babies or children with poorly developed swallowing
- Anyone allergic to miconazole or the ingredients
- People with liver problems
How long should treatment continue?
Use the gel for at least one week after symptoms have gone to fully clear the infection. If you wear dentures, remove them at night and brush them with the gel.
Is choking a real risk for babies and toddlers?
Yes — especially between 4 months and 2 years.
To reduce choking risk:- Never put the gel at the back of the throat.
- Always split the dose into small parts.
- Apply with a clean finger.
- Watch the child during and after the application/
- Never apply the gel on a breastfeeding nipple.

Can I use Daktarin Gel if I am on Warfarin?
No.
Daktarin Oral Gel must not be used if you take warfarin.
It can dangerously increase the effect of warfarin and may cause serious bleeding.Which medicines cannot be taken with Daktarin Gel?
Do not use it with medicines broken down by CYP3A4 or CYP2C9, including:
- Medicines that prolong the QT interval (e.g. astemizole, cisapride, pimozide, quinidine, terfenadine, etc.).
- Ergot alkaloids.
- Statins such as simvastatin or lovastatin.
- Triazolam or oral midazolam.
- Warfarin
Which medicines require extra caution if used together with Daktarin Gel?
Your doctor may need to monitor or adjust doses for:
- Phenytoin
- Sulphonylurea diabetes tablets
- Some HIV medicines (e.g., saquinavir)
- Some cancer medicines (vinca alkaloids, docetaxel, busulfan)
- Certain calcium channel blockers
- Certain immunosuppressants (cyclosporine, tacrolimus, sirolimus)
- Others, such as carbamazepine, alfentanil, sildenafil, methylprednisolone, etc.
Can pregnant or breastfeeding women use Daktarin Oral Gel?
Use should be avoided during pregnancy unless a doctor advises otherwise. If breastfeeding, speak to a doctor or pharmacist first — because small amounts of certain ingredients (such as benzyl alcohol) can build up in the body.
Does it affect driving or concentration?
No, it does not affect alertness or your ability to drive.
How should I store the gel?
- Keep below 30°C
- Shelf life before opening: 3 years
- After opening: discard when your treatment course for this infection is finished.
Is the gel sugar-free and safe for diabetics?
Yes — it is sugar-free. However, it may increase the effect of some diabetes tablets (sulphonylureas), so monitoring may be needed.
Does the gel contain alcohol or allergens?
Yes — very small amounts:
- Ethanol (alcohol): less than 1 ml of beer/wine per dose
- Benzyl alcohol: may cause irritation or allergic reactions
- Benzyl benzoate: may cause allergic reactions
- Polysorbate: may cause allergic reactions
- The small amount of alcohol does not cause noticeable effects.
When should I stop using Daktarin Gel and seek help?
Stop and get urgent medical advice if you notice:
- Severe rash or peeling skin.
- Swelling of the lips, tongue, or face.
- Difficulty breathing.
- Blood in stools, vomiting blood, or unusual bruising (especially if on blood thinners).
