Overview

NOTE: After selecting this product, you will need to complete a short assessment, so we can make sure this medication is suitable for you.

  • About Clotrimazole Cream

Clotrimazole 1% Cream is an antifungal treatment used for common fungal skin infections such as ringworm, athlete’s foot, fungal nappy rash and sweat rash (intertrigo). It also helps soothe external thrush — irritation or soreness of the vulva or the tip of the penis (balanitis). Clotrimazole belongs to a group of medicines called imidazole (antifungal drugs), which work by stopping fungi and yeasts from growing, helping relieve itching, redness and irritation so the skin can heal.

Clotrimazole Cream helps treat fungal and yeast infections on the skin. Most people notice improvement within a few days, but the infection itself takes longer to fully clear. If you’re unsure about the cause of a rash — for you or your baby — ask a pharmacist or GP before using.

  • Directions for Use

How to Use Clotrimazole 1% Cream

There’s no separate dosage for younger or older people. Apply a thin layer of Clotrimazole Cream 2 to 3 times daily, and gently rub it in. A small strip (about half a centimetre) is enough to cover an area the size of your hand.

Before applying, wash and dry the skin thoroughly, especially when treating your feet — be sure to dry between the toes.

    How long to use?

The duration of treatment depends on the type of infection. Clotrimazole Cream helps treat fungal and yeast infections on the skin. Most people notice improvement within a few days, but the infection itself takes longer to fully clear.

    • Thrush (candida infections): treat for at least 2 weeks
    • Other fungal infections ( ringworm, athlete’s foot): treat for about 1 month

Continue using the cream for a few more days after the rash clears to prevent the infection from returning.

Important: Do Not Stop Treatment Early
    • Fungal infections are stubborn. Even after your symptoms (like itching or redness) have gone away, fungal spores can still be present on your skin.
    • You must continue to use the cream for at least two weeks after all symptoms have cleared.
    • If you stop too soon, the infection is likely to return. A 20g tube is typically enough for a complete course of treatment.
  • Clotrimazole 1% Cream Side Effects

When using Clotrimazole Cream, you may see mild redness, itching or peeling as the medicine works. These usually settle. Blisters, severe swelling, or signs of allergy are uncommon but need medical advice. If the rash gets worse instead of better, it may not be fungal — check with a pharmacist or GP.

Mild irritation at the application site

This is the most commonly reported reaction. Patients may notice:

    • Light redness
    • Mild itching
    • Warmth or a slight burning feeling
    • Tingling or “pins and needles”
    • Mild dryness or flaking of the skin
    • These are usually temporary and settle as treatment continues.

Read the Patient Leaflet for the complete side-effect information.

  • Warnings and Precautions

    • For external use only – do not apply inside the mouth, vagina, or on nails or scalp.
    • Avoid contact with eyes – rinse well with water if contact occurs.
    • Do not use this product if you are allergic to clotrimazole or any other ingredient listed in the product.
    • Wash your hands after applying the cream to prevent the spread of infection.
    • When treating your feet, wash and dry them thoroughly, especially between the toes, before applying the treatment.
    • Flammable warning: This cream contains cetostearyl alcohol and benzyl alcohol, which can increase the flammability of fabrics (such as clothing, bedding, and dressings). Keep away from naked flames and avoid smoking while using it.
    • Latex warning: Clotrimazole cream may weaken latex condoms or diaphragms. Use alternative contraception for at least 5 days after use.
    • Stop using and speak to a pharmacist or GP if irritation, swelling, or a rash develops after application.
    • Seek medical advice if symptoms don’t improve within 7 days, get worse, or spread.
  • How should I store Clotrimazole 1% Cream?

Keep Clotrimazole Cream below 25°C, in its original carton, and away from children. Do not use it past the expiry date (last day of the month shown). Ask your pharmacist how to dispose of any unused or expired cream.

  • How do I know if my rash is fungal?

    Fungal rashes often look:

    • Red, itchy and irritated
    • Circular or ring-shaped (ringworm)
    • Sore with small satellite spots (Candida/yeast)
    • Peeling or cracked (athlete’s foot)
    • Shiny, moist or inflamed (skin folds, nappy area)
    • If you’re unsure, speak to a pharmacist or GP before using the cream.
  • How long does the cream take to work?

Symptoms often start improving in a few days, but the infection takes longer:

    • Yeast (Candida) infections: treat at least 2 weeks.
    • Ringworm / athlete’s foot: treat around 1 month.
    • Stopping early can cause the infection to return.
  • How do I use Clotrimazole Cream?

    1. Apply a thin layer to the affected skin 2–3 times a day.
    2. Rub it in gently.
    3. A ½ cm strip of cream treats an area about the size of your hand.

    Treatment duration:

    • Dermatophyte infections: at least 1 month
    • Candidal infections (Candida/yeast): at least 2 weeks
    • If treating feet, wash and dry them carefully — especially between toes — before applying cream.
  • Is it safe for babies?

Yes, for fungal nappy rash caused by Candida.
    But if the rash:

    • hasn’t been diagnosed as fungal
    • looks severe, blistered, or oozing
    • doesn’t improve within a few days → get advice from a pharmacist or GP before continuing.
    • Sources
  • Can I use it for vaginal or penile thrush?

Yes — for external irritation only:

    • Vulval soreness/itching
    • Soreness at the tip of the penis (balanitis)
    • Do not insert the cream inside the vagina or urethra.
  • Can I use condoms while using this cream?

Be careful. Clotrimazole/Canesten Cream can damage latex condoms and diaphragms, reducing protection.
Use alternative contraception for 5 days after finishing the cream.

  • Is it safe in pregnancy or breastfeeding?

    • Pregnancy: Can be used only under supervision of a doctor or midwife.
    • Breastfeeding: Usually safe. Avoid applying to nipples — or wash thoroughly before feeding.
    • Source
  • Why does the cream sometimes sting?

The ingredients cetostearyl alcohol and benzyl alcohol can cause:

    • Mild burning
    • Stinging
    • Redness
    • Irritation

    This is common

    • But if the reaction becomes severe → stop using and seek advice.
  • When should I see a doctor instead?

    Seek medical advice if:

    • The rash spreads or worsens
    • No improvement after 2 weeks (yeast) or 1 month (fungal)
    • You’re not sure it’s fungal
    • There is strong pain, discharge, fever or cracks in the skin
    • The area becomes swollen or blistered
    • Your baby seems distressed or the rash worsens
  • Can I use moisturisers or deodorants with it?

    • Yes — but apply them after the cream has fully absorbed.
    • Avoid heavy ointments that can block the medicine from reaching the skin.
