Overview
What is Wegovy Weight Loss Injection?
Wegovy, also known as semaglutide, is the latest weight loss medication approved by the US FDA on June 4, 2021. Wegovy is now available in the UK (approved by UK NHS: September 2023).
It's for adults dealing with obesity—or excess weight—with a body mass index (BMI) over 30. It can also be used by people with a BMI over 27 who have weight-related problems, such as high blood pressure or type 2 diabetes.
Wegovy injection contains semaglutide as the key ingredient. Semaglutide acts like a natural hormone in your body called glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1). GLP-1, produced by the gut, is released after eating and plays a key role in controlling appetite, blood sugar levels, and weight loss.
How Wegovy Works?
By mimicking GLP-1, Wegovy can help you feel fuller (feel less hungry) for longer and reduce your cravings, leading to significant weight loss.
This medication helps you eat less by turning on certain receptors in your body. When those receptors are activated, you feel fuller and more satisfied, which can make it easier to eat less and lose weight.

How effective is Wegovy weight loss injection?

How Long Does Wegovy Take to Work?

In clinical trials (Step 1 and Step 4), the following weight loss results were observed:
After 6 Months:
Approximately 85% of participants lost at least 5% of their initial body weight.
After One Year:
About 66% of participants lost more than 15% of their initial body weight.

What is the difference between Wegovy and Saxenda?
Wegovy® and Saxenda® are both medications used for weight loss, but they have some key differences:

How to Take Wegovy?
Before you inject Wegovy pen:
Make sure your pen isn't expired, has the right dose, and looks okay (not appear to be damaged or broken). The medicine should be clear. Have a sharps bin ready for used needles.
Pick a spot:
Choose your thigh, arm, or tummy (avoid belly button area). Rotate spots weekly.
Clean: Wipe your injection site with soap and water or an alcohol wipe. Attach a new needle.
Inject:
New pen check (only once): If it's your first pen, press the "flow check" button (two dots) to see medicine flow. If no drop appears after two tries, change the needle and try again. Still no drop? Talk to your doctor.
- Set your dose: Take the exact dose your doctor prescribed
- Push the button: Inject the needle, hold the button until the counter reaches 0, and remove the needle.
After injection:
- Cap and toss: Put the used needle cap back on, then unscrew and throw the needle in your sharps bin
- Recap and track: Put the cap back on your pen and keep track of your doses

Warnings
Wegovy may potentially lead to thyroid tumors, including cancer. If you notice a lump or swelling in your neck, experience hoarseness, have difficulty swallowing, or feel short of breath, inform your healthcare provider,
as these could be symptoms of thyroid cancer. Studies with rodents have shown that Wegovy® and similar medications can cause thyroid tumors, but it's unclear if this applies to humans.
Do NOT use Wegovy if you or any family member have a history of medullary thyroid carcinoma (MTC) or Multiple Endocrine Neoplasia syndrome type 2 (MEN 2).
Wegovy Storage:
- Unopened Wegovy® pens should be refrigerated.
- During use, pens can be stored in the fridge or at room temperature (below 30°C) for up to 6 weeks.
Wegovy Disposal:
- Used pens should be disposed of in the provided sharps bin.
- Check your local council's guidelines for disposing of sharps bins and contents.

How Many Doses are in the Wegovy Pen?
Each Wegovy pen holds four doses, so you'll get four injections from one pen. Remember to use a new needle each time and store the pen in the fridge between doses.

Who cannot take Wegovy?
If you:
- Are over 75
- Are pregnant or breastfeeding
- Have liver, kidney, or heart failure, an eating disorder, or pancreatitis
- Are taking insulin, sulfonylureas, or other weight loss drugs that work similarly to Wegovy, such as Victoza.

Wegovy can lead to serious side effects:

- Pancreatitis: Severe stomach pain, possibly radiating to the back.
- Gallbladder Problems: Upper stomach pain, fever, jaundice, or clay-colored stools.
- Low Blood Sugar: Especially if you take diabetes medications like insulin.
- Kidney Problems: Dehydration from diarrhea, nausea, or vomiting may worsen kidney issues.
- Allergic Reactions: Swelling of face, difficulty breathing, severe rash, fainting, or rapid heartbeat.
- Vision Changes: Notify your healthcare provider of any vision changes.
- Increased Heart Rate: Feeling your heart racing or pounding at rest.
- Depression or Suicidal Thoughts: Pay attention to sudden mood changes and seek help if needed.
Common side effects may include:
- Nausea, diarrhea, vomiting, constipation, stomach pain, headache, fatigue, upset stomach, dizziness, feeling bloated, belching, low blood sugar, gas, stomach flu, heartburn, and runny nose or sore throat.
