What is Wegovy (Semaglutide)?

Wegovy is a licensed weight-loss treatment in the UK, designed to help you manage your weight alongside a healthy diet. In clinical trials, patients using Wegovy successfully lost up to 20% of their total body weight.

Eligibility for Wegovy Weight Loss Injection

To qualify for a Wegovy prescription, our UK medical team reviews your BMI, background, and health history.

• BMI 30 or higher: Eligible based on weight alone.
• BMI 27 to 29.9: Eligible if you also have a weight-related health condition.

BAME Thresholds

For individuals of South Asian, East Asian, Middle Eastern, Black African, or Afro-Caribbean descent, the requirements drop by 2.5 points:

• BMI 27.5 or higher: Eligible based on weight alone.
• BMI 24.5 or higher: Eligible if you also have a weight-related health condition.

How Long Does Wegovy Take To Work For Weight Loss?

Losing weight takes time, even with a GLP-1 medication like Wegovy. But you may notice some changes fairly quickly after starting the medication. Here's how it all comes together.

Wegovy is an effective weight loss treatment when combined with a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity. 

Wegovy typically begins to show noticeable results within the first few weeks. Many patients see weight loss within 4 to 12 weeks, with more pronounced results over 6 months to a year. 

It's important to follow the prescribed dosage and maintain a healthy diet and exercise regimen for the best results.

Wegovy HD (semaglutide) 7.2 mg is a higher-dose formulation designed to support greater weight loss compared with the current Wegovy® dose.

Wegovy now comes in six doses, ranging from 0.25 mg to 7.2 mg. Our prescribers will determine the right dosage schedule for you, typically starting low and gradually increasing it over several weeks to minimise side effects and build tolerance.

How to use Wegovy injection pen?

It should be taken alongside a well-balanced, calorie-controlled diet. Try to keep fat intake under 30% of your total calories, and aim for a diet rich in fruits, vegetables, and whole foods.

Stay Hydrated

Drink 8–11 cups (about 2.7 litres) of fluids per day to support your health while on treatment.

Injecting Wegovy: Step-by-Step

Wegovy is a once-weekly subcutaneous injection, which means it goes just under the skin — NOT into a vein or muscle.

You can inject into:

• The stomach area (avoid a 2-inch radius around your belly button).
• The front of your thighs.
• The upper arms.

Rotate injection sites each week to reduce the risk of skin irritation.

Important: Do not share your pen or needles with others. Doing so could spread infections.

Before Your Injection:

1. Check your pen.

• Make sure the medication is clear, not cloudy or discoloured.
• Confirm the pen is NOT expired and is not damaged.

2. Prepare your injection site

• Wash the area with soap and water or use an alcohol wipe.

3. Attach a new needle

• Use a fresh needle for every injection.

4. Priming (only once)

• You only need to prime the pen once — the first time you use a new pen.
• To prime: Press the flow check button (two dots) and ensure a drop appears.
• If no drop appears after 2 tries, replace the needle and try again. Still nothing? Contact your doctor or pharmacist.

Injecting

• Set your dose as prescribed by your healthcare provider.
• Inject by pressing the button and holding until the dose counter reaches 0.
• Remove the needle carefully.

After Injection

• Dispose of the needle safely in a sharps bin.
• Cap your pen and store it properly.
• Track your dose to stay on schedule.

Wegovy 7.2mg

A stronger 7.2mg dose of Wegovy is now available in the UK.

Who can take Wegovy 7.2mg?
It is designed for people who are getting on well with the standard 2.4mg injection, but have found their weight loss has stopped.

Breaking a plateau
It is completely normal for weight loss to stall as your body gets used to being lighter. This is known as a plateau. The 7.2mg dose gives you an extra push to get past it. To get the best results, it helps to eat plenty of protein, keep an eye on your portion sizes, and stay active.

How to take it
When it first launched, reaching this dose meant using three 2.4mg pens at the same time. Since June 2026, it comes as one simple 7.2mg pen. You only need to take one injection a week.

Is Wegovy 7.2mg effective?

Yes. Clinical data shows that the higher 7.2mg dose (Wegovy HD) is highly effective, particularly for patients who have stopped losing weight on the standard 2.4mg dose.

Is the new 7.2mg dose safe?

Yes. Clinical trials show the higher 7.2mg dose has a safety profile very similar to the standard 2.4mg injection. It has been fully approved by the UK's medicines regulator (the MHRA).

Wegovy (semaglutide) and Mounjaro (tirzepatide) are both prescription injectable medications designed to support weight loss, but they work slightly differently. Wegovy acts on the GLP-1 receptor to help control appetite, while Mounjaro targets both the GLP-1 and GIP receptors, which may enhance its effect in some patients. Patients using Wegovy can expect on average 16% weight loss compared to 22% on Mounjaro on the higher doses of both drugs.  There’s also a difference in price between the two, with Wegovy usually being the cheaper option.

Some patients transition from Mounjaro to Wegovy, for example, when Wegovy is more accessible or cost-effective. However, switching medications should always be discussed with a prescriber to determine the correct dosage and ensure a safe transition. Your pharmacist will consider your current dose, treatment response, and any potential side effects before making changes to your treatment.
