What Is Enstilar Foam?

Enstilar Foam is a topical spray treatment designed to help adults manage plaque psoriasis on the body and scalp. Plaque psoriasis causes red, flaky, and often itchy patches of skin. Enstilar Foam, a prescription product combining calcipotriol and betamethasone dipropionate, works to reduce scaling, thickness, and discomfort. It's easy-to-use spray foam targets affected areas directly, helping to calm redness, reduce scaling, and relieve itching, promoting clearer, healthier-looking skin.

Enstilar Foam at a glance

Enstilar Foam combines betamethasone (a corticosteroid) and calcipotriol (a vitamin D analogue) in a single prescription spray foam and may offer greater efficacy than single-ingredient topical therapy.

It works in two ways

• Calcipotriol: a vitamin D analogue that slows the rapid growth of skin cells.
• Betamethasone: a corticosteroid that dampens inflammation and eases irritation/itching.
• Using both in one foam gives a more substantial effect than either alone.

Enstilar Foam is proven effective

Enstilar Foam is clinically proven to be highly effective for plaque psoriasis: in clinical trials, more than 25% of adults were “Clear” or “Almost Clear” by Week 2, and 53% were “Clear” or “Almost Clear” by Week 4—so clearer skin can be possible in just 4 weeks. Results vary; always follow your prescriber’s advice.

A study in 426 adults compared Enstilar® foam with a dummy spray for plaque psoriasis on the body and arms/legs. After 4 weeks, doctors rated the skin on a 5-point scale. “Success” meant your score improved by at least two steps to “Clear” or “Almost clear”. If you started at “Mild”, you had to be fully “Clear” to count as a success.

Enstilar Foam is used once daily on plaques for up to 4 weeks (adults 18+). See the steps below and follow your prescriber’s instructions.

For Body:

1. Shake the can for a few seconds before use.
2. Hold at least 3 cm away from the affected area.
3. Spray a thin layer directly onto the skin.
4. Gently rub in until absorbed.
5. Leave on the skin as suggested (usually overnight or throughout the day).

For Scalp:

1. Comb hair to remove loose scales.
2. Shake the can well before use.
3. Spray foam into your palm.
4. Scoop up a small amount with a finger and apply gently to the scalp.
5. Avoid getting foam directly on your hair.
6. Wash your hands thoroughly after use.

Maintenance (if you improved after 4 weeks)

If you respond after 4 weeks, you may switch to maintenance: apply twice weekly on two non-consecutive days to areas previously affected.

• Leave 2–3 days with no Enstilar between maintenance applications.
• If signs of relapse appear, return to the once-daily flare regimen above.

Maximum dose

• Do not exceed 15 g per day. A 60 g can should last at least 4 days.
• 15 g ≈ 1 minute of continuous spraying.
• A 2-second spray ≈ 0.5 g, which covers about one adult hand area.
• If you use other calcipotriol products, the total from all calcipotriol-containing topicals must not exceed 15 g/day.
• Treat no more than 30% of the body surface area.

Special populations

• Severe kidney or liver disease: safety and efficacy not evaluated.
• Under 18s: safety and efficacy not established (adult use only).
• Use as directed.
• If irritation is severe or you’re unsure how much to use, stop and seek advice.

• Active: calcipotriol (50 µg/g) + betamethasone dipropionate (0.5 mg/g).
• It comes as a foam in a pressurised can, typically 60 g.

Local reactions: irritation, itching, follicle inflammation, changes in skin colour, worsening of psoriasis in rare cases.

Major cautions:

1. Due to the steroid, there is a small risk that your adrenal system (HPA axis) may be affected, primarily if used over large areas, for prolonged periods, or under dressings.
2. Raised calcium levels in blood or urine have been seen.
3. Avoid getting it in or near the eyes — steroid use on/near the face can increase the risk of cataracts or glaucoma.

Pregnancy & breastfeeding: limited data — use only what is necessary, on the smallest area for the shortest time. As always, read the leaflet, follow your doctor’s instructions, and report any unexpected skin changes or symptoms.

• Store at room temperature (~20‑25°C), keep away from heat sources and open flames (flammable).
• Do not freeze.
• Once opened, the can should be used within approximately 6 months (region-dependent).
• Keep out of sight and reach of children.
• For topical use only — not for mouth, eyes, or vaginal use.
