Overview

NOTE: After selecting this product, you will need to complete a short assessment, so we can make sure this medication is suitable for you.

What is Mercilon and What are its Benefits?

Mercilon is a combined low-dose oral contraceptive pill that contains two active female sex hormones: oestrogen and progestogen. This pill is taken by women who want to prevent pregnancy.

The hormones in the pill work by preventing ovulation i.e. the release of eggs from the ovaries, thus preventing pregnancy.  Mercilon is lower in oestrogen than other types of pills.

It has 20 micrograms rather than 30 micrograms thus recommended to people who have experienced side effects like nausea and breast tenderness when they have tried other types of combined pills.

The Benefits OF Mercilon Pill.

❇️ Mercilon pills may help with painful periods
❇️ Mercilon pills don’t interrupt sex compared with other contraceptives
❇️ Its one of the most reliable reversible methods of contraception if used correctly
❇️ Make your periods regular, lighter, and less painful.

How to Use Mercilon

For the medicine to be effective you need to follow carefully the instructions described in the leaflet or as your doctor, family planning nurse, or pharmacist has told you.

The mercilorn pills are packed in strips of 21- each marked with a day of the week. You should follow the directions of the arrows on the strip and take a pill daily until you are done with the 21 pills.

The pill needs to be taken daily at the same time with some liquid. After 21 days, take a 7-day tablet-free interval. During this interval, you will experience withdrawal bleed which starts on the second or third day after the last tablet and may not have finished before the next strip starts.

How To Start Taking Mercilon

As a new user or starting the pill again after a break you should take your first Mercilon pill on the first day of your next period reading to contraceptive protection with your first pill.

If your period has already begun, start taking Mercilon on day 5 counting the first day of your period as day 1. During this time you must use extra contraceptives as a condom until you have taken the first seven pills correctly.

If you are currently on a 21-day pill, start taking Mercilon the next day after the end of the previous strip. You will have contraceptive protection with your first pill but you will not have a bleed until after you finish your first strip of Mercilon.

If you are taking a progestogen-only pill start Mercilon on the first day of bleeding, even if you have already taken the POP for that day.You will have contraceptive coverage straight away.

If you don’t usually have any bleeding while you are taking a progestogen-only pill, you can stop taking it any day and start Mercilon the next day but you will need to use a condom for the next seven days.

If you are currently on a 28-day pill start taking Mercilon the day after your last active pill. With the first pill, you will have contraceptive protection and you will not have a bleed until after you finish your first strip of Mercilon.

FAQ

  • How effective is the pill?

The combined pill (contains oestrogen and progesterone) is 99.9% effective when taken correctly. The progesterone only pill is 95% effective when taken correctly.

  • What are the benefits of oral contraception?

    Benefits include:

    • Easy and convenient contraceptive method.
    • Highly effective in preventing pregnancy.
    • Lighter periods and also less cramping, bloating, and irritability that are often associated with normal menstruation.
    • Does not interfere with sexual intercourse.
    • May provide some protection from pelvic inflammatory disease which, if left untreated, can lead to infertility.
    • Clear up hormonal acne.
  • What other contraceptive choices are there?

There are many different types of contraception available other than the contraceptive pill. These include:

    • The implant
    • A progesterone only injection
    • Contraceptive patches
    • Inter-uterine Devices (IUD)
    • Vaginal rings
    • Condoms
    • Dams
    • Caps
  • If I am on the pill, does my partner need to use a condom?

In terms of preventing pregnancy, a condom would not be required. However, condoms should be worn during sexual intercourse to protect against sexually transmitted diseases. Condoms are the only way to prevent transmission of STDs.

  • Who should not use the contraceptive pill?

You should not take the contraceptive pill if:

    • You have a history of blood clots
    • You have ever had breast cancer
    • You are pregnant
    • You have a history of heart problems
    • You may also potentially have to avoid oral contraception if you smoke, due to the risk of developing a blood clot.
  • Does the pill prevent STDs?

No. Only condoms prevent STDs. You are still susceptible to STDs if you are having sex without a condom whilst taking the pill.

  • Do I need to take emergency contraception if I have sex when I have forgotten to take my pill?

    This will depend on:

    • the type of contraceptive pill you are taking
    • how many pills you have missed
    • what stage of your cycle you are currently in

Emergency contraception may not always be necessary in this case.

  • Do I need to take the pill at the same time every day?

For combined contraceptive pills it does not matter at what time you take the pill, although you should aim to do this at a regular time every day, and missing one pill will not necessarily mean you are not covered.

For progesterone only (mini pills), they need to be taken at the same time each day or within 3 hours of that time (12 hours for Cerazette). Missing a tablet or not taking it at the right time may lead to bleeding or lack of contraceptive cover.

  • Is it safe to stay on the pill for long periods of time?

Yes, for certain people. Medical evidence suggests that in women who don’t smoke, do not have high blood pressure and are not overweight, it is perfectly safe to continue taking the contraceptive pill up until they are 45.

  • What should I do if I miss a pill?

This will depend on the amount of pills missed. Missing a pill at any time does not compromise contraception but missing two or more pills or starting a new pack late might affect your contraceptive cover.

If you have not taken your pill within 48 hours take your next pill as soon as you remember and continue the rest of the pack as usual. This might mean you need to take 2 pills in 1 day.

  • Can Mercilon stop periods?

You can stop having periods if you take two packs of Mercilon back to back.

  • will Mercilon Affect my weight?

There is no proof that Mercilon, a combination contraceptive pill, will influence your weight. You may see weight fluctuations throughout your cycle due to fluid retention and other factors unrelated to the tablet.
