Acetazolamide is a diuretic (water pill) used to prevent and treat acute altitude sickness. The mechanism of how acetazolamide reduces sickness remains unclear.

Directions
Dosage
The usual dose is one tablet 1 to 4 times a day. To prevent altitude sickness: Acetazolamide should be started 1 to 2 days before your climb, continued during your climb and taken for at least 48 hours after reaching your final altitude. If staying at the high altitude, the medication may need to be continued in order to control your symptoms.
The tablet should be swallowed whole with water and it may be taken with or without food. You should drink plenty of fluids whilst taking this medication.
FAQ
What is the difference between Acetazolamide and Diamox?
Medically speaking, nothing is different. Acetazolamide is the generic version and Diamox is the branded version. Both contain the same amount of the active ingredient, which is acetazolamide.
How do I reduce the symptoms of altitude sickness?
You should do the following if suffering from altitude sickness:
- Stop where you are and rest
- Do not go any higher for 24-48 hours
- Do not smoke, drink alcohol or exercise
- Drink plenty of water
- Take paracetamol or ibuprofen if you have a headache
- Take anti-sickness medication (e.g. promethazine) if you feel sick

- Tired or Irritable
- Dizziness
- Nausea or vomiting
- Headache
- Diarrhoea
- Loss of appetite
- Passing urine more frequently
- Tingling or numbness in the fingers or toes
