Atovaquone/Proguanil (Malarone and Maloff): A Powerful Combination Treatment for Malaria Prevention
Atovaquone/Proguanil (Brands: Maloff and Malarone tablets) is a combination of two drugs with different mechanisms of action, containing 250mg atovaquone and 100mg proguanil.
Atovaquone interferes with the mitochondria of the malaria parasite, while
Proguanil inhibits the parasite's ability to replicate its DNA.It is less likely to encounter resistance from the malaria parasite compared to other medications like doxycycline, mefloquine, and chloroquine. This effectiveness makes it a reliable choice for both preventing and treating malaria.
You can buy atovaquone and proguanil as Maloff tablets from a UK-licensed Ashcroft online pharmacy. Fill in a short online questionnaire for one of our doctors to review. If atovaquone and proguanil are right for you, we will deliver the number of tablets you need.
Taking the pills:
When you're planning to travel to a malaria risk zone, start taking the tablet 2 days before your trip. Take 1 tablet every 24 hrs. at the same time with food or a milky drink (milk, milkshake) if possible, as this helps your body absorb the medicine better.
How long:
Don't stop when you leave! Continue taking 1 tablet daily while you're in the malaria risk area, and for 7 days after you leave.
The Combined Effect:
The combination of Atovaquone and Proguanil delivers a two-way attack against the malaria parasite. Atovaquone weakens the parasite, while Proguanil disrupts its ability to reproduce, making it difficult for the infection to persist in the bloodstream or spread.
Important:
- If you vomit within 1 hour of taking Atovaquone and Proguanil, take another tablet.
- If it's been over 1 hour, no need for an extra tablet
- If you forget a dose, take it when remembered. No need for extra tablets.
