Diarrhoea is the frequent passing of loose watery stools (faeces). Traveller’s diarrhoea is diarrhoea that occurs as a result of travelling abroad. This is most common in individuals travelling to areas where hygiene may be poorer.
Traveller’s diarrhoea can be caused by bacteria, viruses or protozoa in contaminated food and drinking water. The cause cannot always be identifiable in a stool sample.
Symptoms include:
Specific treatment is not usually required but drink plenty of fluids, especially water to stay hydrated. Antidiarrhoeal medicines such as loperamide can be taken to stop the diarrhoea and stomach pains. A short course of antibiotics may be needed to treat moderate to severe traveller’s diarrhoea, although this is generally not needed.
