NOTE: After selecting this product, you will need to complete a short assessment, so we can make sure this medication is suitable for you.
Champix contains an active ingredient called varenicline tartrate, which works to relieve cravings and withdrawal symptoms associated with quitting smoking. Nicotine is the addictive ingredient in a cigarette, which works by binding to a nicotine-receptor in the brain, resulting in the release of a short term pleasure hormone called dopamine. This is why many find it difficult to quit smoking. Champix contains no nicotine and works by binding to the nicotine-receptor in the brain instead of the nicotine from a cigarette, blocking the release of dopamine. So if you smoke a cigarette whilst on champix, you will not feel any pleasure from smoking, which can help remind you why you are quitting smoking and reduce the chances of you smoking in the future.

Champix is initially prescribed as a 12 week course, which includes 1 starting month box and 2 continuing month boxes. Champix should be taken after eating with a full glass of water. Swallow the tablet whole - do not crush or chew the tablet.
It is important to use the champix starter pack to gradually increase the dose, to avoid unwanted side effects and to increase your chances of stopping smoking.
You must decide on a quit date where you will give up cigarettes completely. This is usually between day 8 and day 14 of champix treatment, but it can be as long as 5 weeks into the treatment if you do not feel ready by day 14.
Usual doses are:
- Day 1 to 3 - one 0.5mg white champix tablet once a day.
- Day 4 to 7 - one 0.5mg white champix tablet twice a day (one in the morning and one in the evening at the same time everyday).
- Day 8 (quit date) to the end of week 12 - one 1mg blue champix tablet twice a day (one in the morning and one in the evening at the same time everyday).
How effective is champix?
Studies showed that just under half of Champix users quit smoking during weeks 9 to 12 of treatment. Champix also helped reduce the urge to smoke. However, champix works best when paired with willpower and motivation to stop smoking.
What is the difference between champix and other stop smoking treatments?
There are many other stop smoking treatments, most of them fall under the category of nicotine replacement therapy (NRT). NRTs include products such as patches, nasal sprays, chewing gum, mouth sprays and lozenges. NRTs work by releasing nicotine without all of the other harmful substances found in a cigarette, resulting in alleviated withdrawal symptoms. This is different to champix as champix does not release any nicotine, instead it blocks the nicotine receptors, resulting in the action of smoking not feeling pleasurable any more.
Is champix safe to use for a long period of time?
Champix is usually prescribed for 12 weeks, if this was not enough then it can be prescribed for a further 12 weeks. Use for any longer than 24 weeks total is not recommended.
How long does it take for champix to work?
If used correctly, you should start to see the full benefits of champix after approximately 5 weeks of using it.
What should I do if I miss a dose of champix?
Take the tablet as soon as you remember. If you remember when it is almost time for your next dose, miss the tablet and just take the next dose. Do not take 2 tablets to make up for the missed tablet.
Can I smoke whilst taking champix?
Before you start taking champix, you must decide on a date that you will stop smoking. This is usually between day 8 and day 14 of using champix. It may be longer if you are struggling but you must not continue to smoke after 5 weeks of using champix.
Will champix make me feel depressed?
Some people have reported feeling depressed after using champix. It is unclear whether this is from using champix or from stopping smoking. If you feel depressed, you must speak to your doctor and they may reduce your dose of champix. If the feeling worsens or you start to experience suicidal thoughts, you must stop taking champix immediately and speak to your doctor.
- Vivid dreams - this can be reduced if you take champix with food
