NOTE: After selecting this product, you will need to complete a short assessment, so we can make sure this medication is suitable for you.

Aldara 5% cream contains the active ingredient imiquimod, and is an effective topical treatment for external genital and perianal warts. Aldara cream is licensed for both genital and external anal warts in and around the anus. Aldara cream works by stimulating the immune system to attack the HPV virus, which stops the virus from multiplying, and so the genital warts should clear. Warts treated with Aldara are less likely to recur, and you may never have them again.

Warts cannot be completely cured, only treated. However, it is possible for the HPV virus to lie dormant, which means the warts may never show again, but unfortunately the HPV virus will still be in your body.

Please read the following warnings before using Aldara cream to ensure it is safe and effective for you:

  • If you have open sores: do not start using Aldara cream until after the sores have healed.
  • If you have internal warts: do not use Aldara cream in the urethra (the hole from which urine is passed), the vagina (birth canal), the cervix (internal female organ), or anywhere inside your anus (rectum). Do not apply Aldara internally.
  • Aldara cream can weaken latex condoms and diaphragms. Additional contraception may be required. If you decide to have sexual relations while you still have warts, apply Aldara cream after - not before - sexual activity.
  • Do not use Aldara cream without consulting your GP if you have problems with your immune system, either due to illness (e.g. HIV) or because of the medicines you are already taking.
  • If applying the cream is uncomfortable or the area becomes uncomfortable during treatment, wash the cream off with mild soap and water. Allow the affected area to recover and then restart treatment.

Aldara cream should be applied 3 times a week with a gap of at least one day between applications. E.g. Monday, Wednesday and Friday.

Apply Aldara cream before going to bed. You should wash your hands and genital area, then open a sachet and squeeze some cream onto your fingertips. Gently rub the aldara cream onto the affected areas until the cream vanishes. Throw away the sachet and wash your hands with soap and water. Leave the Aldara cream on for 6 to 10 hours, do not shower in this time and do not cover the area in dressings or bandages.

Do not use Aldara cream for more than 16 weeks. If the warts have not cleared after 16 weeks you should see your doctor.
